Refugee sponsors must provide settlement support for 12 months or until the family becomes self-sufficient. Approx $30,000 is needed for a refugee family of four; the federal government contributes 40% of the funds while community fundraising is required for the remaining amount.​ Click here to donate.

 

Organize a fundraiser

The are many ways to fundraise, with activities involving friends, family, neighbours, colleagues, clubs, sports team, or classrooms. A fundraiser can be big or small; anything from a concert performance to a garage sale.

 

In-kind support

Providing "in-kind" services or commodities in place of monetary donations can sometimes be more convenient for businesses, tradespeople, professionals, etc. In-kind contributions will be accepted for both pre-arrival support and for assisting the refugee family as they settle in Summerland. Note that tax receipts will not be issued for in-kind donations.

 

Help find affordable housing

Affordable rental accommodation can be hard to find in the Okanagan and help is needed to identify good housing options.

 

Donate household furnishings, supplies, other goods

We have all the furniture, clothing and other goods that we need at this time. Thank you to all who have so generously donated!

 

Spread the word

Brush up on the basics of the worldwide refugee crisis, find out why these refugees have fled their homes, and why they are coming to Canada. There are lots of myths being circulated about refugees so it’s important to let others know you value the newcomers and support their arrival.

 

Volunteer to help the family get settled

We are looking for volunteers to help refugees with the basics of getting settled in their new community; including filling out paperwork, driving them to appointments, child care, helping them learn English, showing them the local schools and grocery stores, etc.
